Guidebook name: Super Fire Pro-Wrestling Winning Strategy SpecialYear: 1992 Published by: Keibunsha Pages:95 The next guidebook that I'll be scanning covers Fire Pro's debut entry on the Super Famicom. Originally released in 1991, Super Fire Pro-Wrestling could arguably be the first-ever Pro-Wrestling game on Nintendo's 16-bit hardware in general.
Like many of the guidebooks already posted, this guide was put together by Japanese publisher Keibunsha. I believe this book may also be the first time Keibunsha worked with HUMAN on a publication.
So many firsts, so little time. Let's get right into it!
The cover depicts Giant Baba unleashing a 16mon Kick (big boot) to Antonio Inoki. The inner sleeve advertises other guides that were released by Keibunsha. Left page: Super Wagan land, Super Chinese World (known as Super Ninja Boy outside of Japan). Right page: Metroid for Game Boy and Famista Retsuden. The inner cover and back. Page 1: the table of contents. I never noticed it until now, but the cover model for Super Fire Pro-Wrestling's box art (pictured above) is receiving an Enzuigiri! You can see the boot making contact with the Wrestler to the right of the photo. In case you are new to Japanese books, pages are numbered from right to left. Page 2 tabs out button information, while page 3 explains the five selectable game modes. Page 4 continues game mode information, including a summary of options mode, and using passwords for level progress. Page 5 is the title page for the 21 standard Wrestlers featured in Super Fire Pro-Wrestling. Like the front cover, every Wrestler in this Super Fire Pro-Wrestling guidebook features their own cartoon illustration. A common trend with early Fire Pro guides is that every Wrestler is also pictured performing their finishing moves on an opponent. In the above example, pages 6 - 7 depict Victory Musashi (Antonio Inoki) applying an Enzuigiri to Mad Tiger (Tiger Jeet Singh). The writing in black and red discloses which move in the Wrestler's movelist which causes the opponent to bleed. Pages 8 - 9: Great Shiba (Giant Baba) performing a Dropkick on Victory Musashi (Antonio Inoki). Pages 10 - 11: Thunder Ryu (Genichiro Tenryu) peforming a Powerbomb on Makoto Higaki (Masakatsu Funaki). Pages 12 - 13: Ax Duggan (Hulk Hogan) performs an Axe Bomber on Super Kaizer (Jushin Liger). Pages: 14 - 15: Hurricane Rikimaru applies a Sasori-Gatame (Sharpshooter) on Mitsuhide Hikawa (Mitsuharu Misawa). Pages 16 - 17: Shinya Hatamoto (Shinya Hashimoto) performing a DDT on Astro Blaster (The Ultimate Warrior). Pages 18 - 19: Jo Kajiwara (Yoshiaki Fujiwara) applies a heel hold on Ax Duggan (Hulk Hogan). Pages 20 - 21: Makoto Higaki (Masakatsu Funaki) pulls off palm strikes against Knight Blaster (Road Warrior Hawk). Pages 22 - 23: Mitsuhide Hikawa (Mitsuharu Misawa) pulls off a Tiger Driver to Iron Blaster (Road Warrior Animal). Have I mentioned how much I love the illustrations in Keibunsha's early guides lately? Pages 24 - 25: Tommy Bomber (Jumbo Tsuruta) performs a Backdrop on Jo Kajiwara (Yoshiaki Fujiwara). Stay tuned for more page scans from this guide!

As the Fire Pro series was still a few games away from having tops/shirts added, all of the Wrestlers in the first Super Fire Pro-Wrestling remain shirtless. As such, the Wrestler illustrations found in the early Keibunsha guides would also follow suit. A perfect example of this is the next featured Wrestler:
Pages 26 - 27: Super Kaizer (Jushin Liger) performs a Shooting Star Press on Shinya Hatamoto (Shinya Hashimoto). Pages 28 - 29: Phantom Guy (Pegasus Kid/Chris Benoit) performs a Brainbuster on Victory Musashi (Antonio Inoki)). Pages 30 - 31: Bloody Allen (Bad News Brown) dishes out a headbutt on Star Bison (Stan Hansen). How can you not love these wacky, over-the-top illustrations? Pages 32 - 33 features Mad Tiger (Tiger Jeet Singh) applying his patented Cobra Claw on Victory Musashi (Antonio Inoki).

My Wrestler of choice! Pages 34 - 35: Knight Blaster (Road Warrior Hawk) unleashing a Flying Clothesline on Phantom Guy (Pegasus Kid). You can't have Hawk without his trusted tag partner. Pages 36 - 37: Iron Blaster (Road Warrior Animal) wields a Powerslam on Blade Musha (The Great Muta). Besides a revolutionary timing-based grappling engine, Fire Pro's other big selling point was it's ability to create dream matches with Wrestlers from
different promotions. Pages 38 - 39 is a good example of this, with Blade Musha (The Great Muta) unearthing a Moonsault on Great Shiba (Giant Baba). Pages 40 - 41: Astro Blaster (The Ultimate Warrior) raises Hurricane Rikimaru (Riki Choshu) with a Gorilla Press Slam. Pages 42 - 43: Akira Saeba (Akira Maeda) doles out a Capture Suplex on Bloody Allen (Bad News Brown). Pages 44 - 45: Hitman Saber (Big Van Vader) unleashes a Vader Attack on Akira Saeba (Akira Maeda). Pages 46 - 47: Star Bison (Stan Hansen) unloads the Western Lariat on Hitman Saber (Big Van Vader). Page 48 mentions the three hidden boss characters: Big The Great Bull (Bruiser Brody), Ittetsu Wakamoto (Kotetsu Yamamoto), and Rikiozan (Rikidozan), and how to face them in World Championship/Official League mode. Unfortunately, illustrations of the bosses were not added to this guide. Page 49 is the title page for the techniques section.
While the rest of the guide lacks colour (a money-saving practice common with Japanese magazines from the era), the guide is sprinkled with additional Wrestler illustrations.
Pages 50 introduces Super Fire Pro-Wrestling's training mode. A brief summary of the five lessons (listed as 'levels' here) are provided. Page 51 explains use of the Y button with specific throws. More page scans from this guide are coming...

The Super Fire Pro-Wrestling guidebook continues! Page 52 focuses on timing and standard strike techniques. Page 53 involves orthodox fight methods, and wearing an opponent's stamina down. Page 54 discusses 'hammer throw' (irish whip/running techniques). Page 55 details bloody-inducing techniques with a nice bonus picture of Tiger Jeet Singh. Page 56 covers tag match and teamwork techniques, with inserts explaining cut play and combination play. Page 57 is the title page for the advanced techniques section. Page 58 features out-of-the-ring techniques, such as 'hammer throw countout'. Page 59 focuses on running techniques (referred in this guide as 'dash' techniques). Notice the bonus photo of Hogan in entrance attire? Page 60 discusses more dash attacks. Page 61 focuses on power techniques, submissions and Wrestler damage. Pages 62 details additional fight situations, including "down", "groggy" and "rope" spots. Page 63 explains clearing Official League/World Championship mode's second playthrough, in both the singles and tag team divisions. Page 64 is the 1st special column section, with a bonus illustration of Antonio Inoki. Page 65 is the title page for competitive techniques. Pages 66 - 67 feature more competitive techniques, along with a bonus illustration of Akira Maeda. Page 68 starts with a description of Elimination Match mode instances. Page 69 lists tag match tricks, with an extra illustration of Stan Hansen. Stan's speech bubble roughly translates to "crush your enemies with combination play!".
Page 70 rounds up the competitive techniques section with a repeat illustration of Giant Baba. Page 71 is the title page for the most in-depth section of the guide: the data collection section. Consider these pages as the grandfather of Fire Pro CPU Logic. Pages 72 - 73 contains the Wrestler Pattern Chart. The rows list moves and percentages out of 100, while the columns contain all of the Wrestlers. Pages 74 - 75 focuses on ratios for moves with different Wrestler sizes. A bonus illustration of Riki Choshu is also included. Page 76 lists computer level, which explains the rising difficulty level in Official League/World Championship mode's singles and tag team divisions. The first column lists the CPU difficulty level for the first playthrough. Likewise, the second column displays the difficulty level for the second playthrough. For example, level 7 of the singles division's first playthrough has a difficulty of level 3. On page 76, a repeated illustration of Tiger Jeet Singh gloats that the opponents are getting stronger in stronger in Official League mode. Page 77 talks about stamina and recovery. Big Van Vader is featured with text that urges the importance of Wrestler recovery and "inside work". More scans from this guide will be added shortly.

Page 78 discusses offensive and defensive capabilities for every Wrestler. Page 79 is the introduction to secret techniques. Page 80 tells players how to unlock the hidden wrestlers, while page 81 lists the moveset, stats and additional information for Big The Great Bull (Bruiser Brody). Page 82: Ittetsu Wakamoto (Kotetsu Yamamoto)'s profile. Page 83: Rikiouzan (Rikidozan)'s profile. Back before simming matches with CPU opponents was commonplace in the Fire Pro series, page 84 reveals how to select CPU vs CPU matches. The three shots at the bottom of page 84 mentions that the trick also works for tag matches, the hidden Wrestlers, and even suggests watching a dream matchup between Giant Baba and Antonio Inoki (and rightfully so, as Super Fire Pro-Wrestling was the first Fire Pro to feature both legends in the same game). Page 85 explains how two players can use the same character. The duplicate trick also works for hidden Wrestlers. Page 86 reveals how to unlock the special Lumberjack match settings. Page 87 uncovers how to use the hidden referees 'WOMAN' and 'CHACHA' (the latter being a member of the Fire Pro staff). Page 88 is called 'the history of Fire Pro Wrestlng', and covers the first three entries (by 1991) in the Fire Pro series: including Combination Tag, 2nd BOUT and Pro-Wrestling on the Gameboy. We're also treated to a bonus illustration of Hulk Hogan again saying "Fire Pro-Wrestling is ICHIBAN (number one in Japanese), it's the best!!" Page 89 is the title page for the 'special interview edition' involving the three people who created Fire Pro Wrestling. Pages 90 - 91 feature an interview with series creator Masato Masuda. For a man who was known to be quite a private individual (and an individual who was also rarely-photographed), this is a very rare glimpse into the mindset of Fire Pro's originator. Pages 92 - 93: an interview with another longtime HUMAN staff member: CHACHAMARU. Chacha mentions his favourite in-game Wrestlers are Jushin Liger and Shinya Hashimoto. Additionally, Chacha is also a big fan of Koji Kitao (which may explain why Kitao was a staple in the early Fire Pro games). Apparently, HUMAN hosted a series of 'King of Fire Pro' tournaments in Japan. Chacha mentions the fourth tournament would be held during spring break, and would feature two games (Super Fire Pro-Wrestling and Super Soccer Formation). Players competing in the Fire Pro competition would compete for the Masuda cup (named after series creator Masato Masuda). Pages 94 - 95: interview with game designer Daisuke Asako. Mr. Asako recommends we play one hour a day to improve our Fire Pro skills. Mr. Asako goes on to recommend challenging tougher opponents, and setting the difficulty higher in the options menu ("no glory without effort"). The final page and book credits. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't see that the guidebook covers each wrestler's "hidden" grapples (both Front and Back)? For example, Hogan has a Powerslam by pressing Y + B + Up (front grapple) and a Sleeper Hold by pressing Y + B + Left (back grapple).
Seems odd that a guidebook like this wouldn't cover that (you can obviously get the info now on GameFaqs)!

Bro that Tenryu powerbomb looks to be Funaki as he has his shin pads. You're probably right. I had my doubts - and was thinking of Tenryu's infamous feud with Jumbo in the late 80's. I don't recall the secret grapples being tabbed out in this guidebook. In fact, the seller threw in a page from another guidebook that had all the moves tabbed out. Although I wrote the guide on gameFAQs (my handle there is fire_pro_fan), I'll tab them out here anyway:

Great work as always - and thanks for all your GameFaqs work over the years! Have sent you a contribution via PayPal! Thank you so much. With your help, I was able to put some money towards 8 more guides/Fire pro-related items that will be arriving soon. After taking the time to read through this book's content more thoroughly, I discovered that this guide does in fact mention the hidden front and back grapples! At the bottom of page 70, you can see screenshots of Stan Hansen's Short-Ranged Lariat, and Giant Baba's DDT. Both of which are the duo's secret front grapples. The associated text simply mentions how to perform the grapples, but doesn't map out each
Wrestler's specific input.
The guide then goes on to mention that the chance of pulling off a secret grapple is 1 in 5, which reminded me of trying to perform a hadouken/shoryuken/hurricane kick in the original Street Fighter. Early on, it appears that the seemingly unresponsive controls were intentional by design.
In later Fire Pro titles, this randomized system for pulling off secret moves was thankfully redacted.
Thanks to everyone for supporting the project so far!

No worries at all - great to hear there's more on the way.
Good spot re: page 70 ... although I think it actually says that the chances might be as low as 1 in 256, which I don't really get (unless it's some reference to reversal rates (which themselves are dependent on Health, which goes from 1 to 256)).
Agreed that it was a good idea for Human to ditch the 'secret' moves. I think Super Fire Pro Wrestling X (1995) was the first title to replace these with a standard "2 button" grapple move (secret 2 button grapple moves had been a staple in every game up until then) and that's obviously been the case ever since.

If you'd like to support my scanning project, you can send donations to me via paypal at: tigerdrivercollectibles@gmail.comAs always, any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading! If it is still ok with you, we will be reviewing Super Fire Pro Wrestling later this year with a manual scan and translation, but I would like to convert all your scans to CBZ format and upload to archive.org. It will probably be around December so I might be able to loosely translate the book by then as well. Would you like your credit graphic included as well? Also we will be releasing our Champion Wrestler review and manual translation later this week and credited you for your help on Big Ben Howitzer, let us know if you are ok with the graphic being shown in the video.
