The problem is, fans want offense, not defense. So leagues will do what they can to give the fans what they want, which is a shame in my opinion.

So Hue Jackson finally "led" the Browns to a win :p
Cleveland has been playing some decent football since he got fired from them.

I thought that was an incredibly cool gesture. Hue Jackson is good football coach. He's just not a good HEAD coach and quite frankly, Cleveland is a place where HC careers go to die. Neat that his former player acknowledged him despite him being on the opposing sideline now.
Then again, maybe the player was covertly suggesting that Hue "rescue" him from being on Cleveland's roster xD

Former University of Texas football head coach Mack Brown is hired by North Carolina for the same job.
Um, he's 67. Wonder how that will affect recruiting. Will prospects sign up, knowing he could kick the bucket or retire within the next few years?
And at 67, can he handle the daily grind of a major college football head coach?
We'll see what happens there.

Forget New Year's Eve because it's time for the annual NFL coaching purge known as Black Monday. Here are the casualties so far:
Marvin Lewis parts ways with the Bungles and endorse his inferior clone in Hue Jackson. I would encourage Cincy to throw a parade for doing something that was a decade overdue, but if they hire Hue to replace him, that would just be classic Bungles. This team will go NOWHERE until that owner sells or dies. Period.
Adam Gase out of Miami - Head scratcher here. He had the team in playoff form despite horrid QB work from Tannehill and Cutler
Steve Wilks out of Arizona - Completely inept at his position. No-brainer here.
Dirk Koetter out of Tampa - Great coach if you want to finish 5-11.
Todd Bowles out of New York - Never had control over the team whatsoever.
Steve Sarkisian sent to early rehab from Atlanta - Probably explains why Julio Jones waited so damn long to finally score TDs again.
Vance Joseph out of Denver - Was given Case Keenum, an aging defense, and John Elway's lack of patience. He had no chance.

Wilks not having even a handle on the defense was a bad sign, though transitioning from a 3-4 to a 4-3 (or vice versa) takes time. That offense being as bad as it was is the nail in the coffin.
Koetter and Bowles, and Joseph never could get anything going, though the personnel was never on their side either.
I never thought Gase was the offensive wiz he was made out to be. Maybe his QB situation was the reason, but my guess is ownership wants another crack at bringing in a Harbaugh (and no I dont think they'll get either)...
I just want to know which team is going to regret hiring Mike McCarthy. That is going to be a fun team to bet against.

Shame that Denver didn't can John Elway along with Vance Joseph.

I bet McCarthy goes to Cleveland and the Broncos foolishly sign Joe Flacco.

Flacco is a strong armed, immobile quarterback with a low completion percentage. If the Jags don't sign him I will eat my hat...

The Gase firing surprised me. I thought he was a halfway decent coach who had an ineffective QB. He'll get an OC job somewhere. Bengals firing Lewis was long overdue. But if they hire Hue......I fear there will be a riot in Cincinnati. Packers canning McCarthy was long overdue. He refused to change his offensive philosophy to adjust to ever changing defenses in today's game. What worked in 2010-11 does not work today. Just look at the Saints' Sean Payton. They went 7-9 three years in a row. Payton adjusted and now they are Super Bowl favorites. John Elway needs to go along with Vance Joseph. Elway has no fucking idea what he is doing. No surprise Steve Sarkisan was sent packing from Atlanta. His hire was a head scratcher to begin with. They could have promoted someone from Kyle Shanahan's offense to keep the continuity in that offense. But the biggest thing is, along with John Elway, other GM's need to be held accountable with the Broncos, Cardinals and Jets on the top of the list. I used to say the same thing about Cleveland, but John Dorsey appears to have righted that ship and taken off in the right direction. He now just needs to find that coach to keep their momentum going. As for my Packers, I fear the dark ages of the 70's and 80's have returned. It's now a matter of wait and see who they get as their HC. And Zealot , what happened to your Steelers this year? Looks like they were victims of the Madden curse.

Curse be damned. We have a few too many drama queens on our team. The inner Yinzer in me believes the dark ages are imminent.

Sorry, a little off topic, but I need some sports advice!
So, I'm not a huge sports fan, have friends who are, I've tried, but I just can't get into it. I'm Canadian, understand hockey (no need to add "ice" to hockey, it's a redundancy up here), but just don't care that much about it (our NHL team has been in the toilet for decades even though we have the league's top player, one person can't fix years of bad management decisions, but that's another story...). While visiting family friends in the US a few years back, we were at a BBQ with a bunch of their friends and neighbours, and ALL of them raved about college ball. They told me tales of families willing season ticket spots to their children, and the resulting destruction of sibling bonds when one child is favoured over another, and just how amazing the spectacle really is. I also listen to Bill Burr, and he's always raving about the Pats and college stuff. Yesterday, I thought I'd throw on the Sugar Bowl game because I noticed Texas was playing Georgia, and my better half went to college in Texas so I figured she might be more down with me leaving it on! :)
That shit was pretty awesome! I love the pace of it, it seems to move along much faster than NFL games, and the energy just seems different in general. Plus, How can you hate watching a game when one of the players is named (Cameron) Dicker the kicker (I marked out hard when I saw a dude lining up for a field goal, saw the number seventeen, then read the name)? Okay, so in the treasured collective opinion of this fine gathering of sports minds would be worth the time of a total n00b checking out? Thanks in advance!

Hi, Chicago Bears fan of over thirty years here, and I'd just like to say (piercing wail that shatters all the windows in my house, knocks out power to the entire block, and gives all the local dogs a deep feeling of sadness for a full three weeks)

I'd like to apply for the position of kicker. Couldn't be any worse than what they've had!

I’m more stunned than anything right now, but at least for the first time in a while, there’s hope that we’ll have another shot next year. The foundation is solid, the coaching is staff is great (especially if Fangio sticks around), and there are plenty of solid free agent kickers (like Robbie Gould, who was at the game) this off-season.
