Has anyone here tried this game yet? I’m interested to see what people of your discerning and refined taste in wrestling games have to say about this one. 🙂

After the shoddy release of WWE's Wrestlefest, Retromania Wrestling is a game I wanted to love. The graphics and feel of the original are certainly there. The main problem for me is the roster.
With WWE owning the rights to many of the legends that were featured in the original, it's an understandable obstacle that doomed the developers of Retromania from the start.
Like so many other players, I pitched the idea of a Create-A-Wrestler mode to remedy the situation. Take the approach of Fire Pro World and include the necessary edit pieces and moves for us to create the missing Wrestlers ourselves. To cover the cost of such a feature, I even suggested Create-A-Wrestler as a future DLC add-on.
Not only would a Create-A-Wrestler mode allow us to add in the missing Wrestlers from the original Wrestlefest, we'd also be able to add in brand new Wrestlers (or even fictional edits from our own promotions) to the mix. Could you imagine Great Muta or Sting? How about a WCW-inspired WrestleFest? Dare I say ...even an AJPW/NJPW/FMW Wrestlefest?
If a decent Create-A-Wrestler mode was added, I'd definitely purchase Retromania in a heartbeat. But, as it stands with an underwhelming roster (with all due respect to the talent involved), I'll stick with playing the original on MAME.

The roster is the main thing keeping me from this game, it looks terrible. I’d rather have had an entirely fictional roster. I’d never expect any of the classic WWF guys to be in this, but some of the door knobs they picked are very questionable. WWE missed the boat here, this engine with their licence would have been gold.
Do you think they opted out of an edit mode because of the amount of DLC they’ve churned out? How does the saying go, why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free? Why buy their pre made, pricy dlc guys when you can whip them up in edit mode?!

You do bring up a very good question, BakFu. Though, I think charging money for a Create-A-Wrestler mode would interest more people than specific fans of certain Wrestlers. As to my knowledge, only three Wrestlers were added for DLC at the moment: Mr. Hughes, James Storm and Chris Bey. Two Wrestlers I would to LOVE to see are The Great Muta and Sting. Neither of which are tied down by WWE legends contracts. Both of which would fit right in with The Road Warriors.

That Legends thing is a nightmare. The game would be amazing with the top guys from that era, including Sting and Muta. Tully, Arn, Flair, Steamboat, Dusty, and Luger for instance, would be great! Maybe the Rock n Roll and Midnight Express? I’d love to see the Bulldogs and the Hart Foundation in here, too. What about Andre? I understand that they tie guys down for merch reasons, but it’s not like the WWE cares about pro wrestling in the context of what that term meant when their “legends” were in the game, so why not give them back to fans of the product of that era so we can enjoy games featuring these guys, and the boys can get a cut of the action? I’m so burned out by licensing bullshit, especially when it comes to someone’s PERSONA or even their actual name! Sorry, but I don’t have a clue who those three DLC people are and don’t care, and I’m just day dreaming about how cool it would be to see the classic guys represented in a new project. 😶🌫️

I'm on the dev team, if my name still has any pull 'round these parts.
CAW isn't in the plans. Would be a monstrous task with the way our sprites are done and our extremely limited manpower.

Taking a Create-A-Wrestler mode out of the equation, another idea came to mind recently: generic, legally-friendly Wrestlers like the roster of 80's Mania Wrestling Returns. A working title could be Fantasy-Mania Wrestling. Or (if a crossover was possible) Retromania Wrestling Returns as a followup.
Retromania Wrestling may be the spiritual successor to WWF WrestleFest, but a Fantasy/Returns sequel could branch the series out into the pop culture realm with Wrestlers based on popular TV shows, movies, video games, etc (again, legally, not-so-obvious versions). Returns has so many wacky characters to choose from already. Talk about a killer roster. One tradition I've noticed in Wrestling games is that players are always trying to add comic book, movie and cartoon characters to Wrestling games. Just look at all of the player -created Spider-Man and TMNT characters in WWE's 2K series on Youtube. Even without an Edit mode, adding in pop culture references could scratch that itch for many-a-player (or perhaps even garner new ones who aren't necessarily Wrestling fans to begin with).
Personally, I see a lot of potential in the Retromania series. We need more retro Wrasslin' throwbacks made in this style.

We're not necessarily opposed to adding fictional guys, but before we can even think about that, we have to get through the rest of the stuff that's already been announced, and all the stuff we have planned that hasn't yet been made public.

I remember seeing a picture showcasing sprite work for Mat Mania Wrestlers. Were there plans to include the Mat Mania cast as playable characters in Retromania Wrestling?
