Well, I'm mostly doing this 'cause the original thread devolved into arguing about NOAH and AJPW, neither of which have anything to do with the subject at hand. But anyway...
One year after its release on consoles, Fire Pro Wrestling World is getting a second collaboration with a real-life wrestling promotion - this time around, it's for World Wonder Ring Stardom, one of the premier women's wrestling promotions in Japan today.
WHAT IS STARDOM?
Feel free to send corrections for anything I'm flagrantly wrong about, but -- Stardom is a women's wrestling (joshi if you're feeling particularly Japanophilic) promotion started up in the early 2010's by the trio of businessman and wrestling promoter Rossy Ogawa; Jd' alumnus Fuka, and veteran Nanae Takahashi. It was a successor to Jd's philosophy of mixing the beauty of its competitors - many of whom would appear in photo books and pin-up calendars - with their athleticism in ring.
In its early years, its top billed star was gravure (essentially a genre of softcore pin-up photos and videos) idol Yuzuki Aikawa. Following her retirement from pro wrestling, the company built itself around the likes of Kairi Hojo (nee Kairi Sane) and Io Shirai, among others. It is, incidentally, the site of a particularly gruesome match where the monster heel Yoshiko went against the script, badly injured Act Yasukawa with shoot blows to the face, and forced her into retirement; this ended up as a media spectacle in Japan. Since then, the company and its talent have made efforts to communicate more closely with one another to prevent another such scandal; and to better address talent concerns.
Its style is fast-paced, with plenty of tag and trio bouts and a dose of comedy to help give it a fun atmosphere.
WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE DLC SO FAR?
Mostly that it exists! Firepro director Tomoyuki Matsumoto (@tomozou_kantoku) told followers on Twitter that, along with the work being done on the NJPW 2018 Wrestler Pack, they were proceeding with voice recording sessions for another promotion, to be announced on August...
him saying that thing i said he said
... which was followed up shortly by some pictures on the official Stardom twitter, of members of its roster doing voice work for a "famous game's" DLC due out this summer.
100% confirmation that it's Stardom came about in the usual way people discover DLC for games these days - trawling SteamDB and finding a database entry for the Stardom Collection, added to the Fire Pro World DLC catalog. The collaboration was made official as of August 8, 2019, in Japan.
The DLC includes, as you'd expect, new moves, wrestler parts, voice clips and themes for the cast of wrestlers within.
THE ROSTER
The collaboration is going to be a bit on the smaller side - 10 Stardom ... stars, a sampling of the top stars of each stable.
So far, we know the following wrestlers, based on prior tweets:
STARS
- Mayu Iwatani: The Icon of Stardom and one of its top babyfaces. A high flyer with nice suplexes and the abiity to make everything look brutal when done to her.
- Starlight Kid:The Starlight Genius. The best. A masked wrestler with a variety of cool, lucha-inspired techniques.
- Arisa Hoshiki: The Shining Star of Stardom and expert of the Brazilian Kick. Recently returned to Stardom after a long absence from pro wrestling. Tam Nakano's one-sided rival.
QUEENS QUEST
- Momo Watanabe: A talented all-rounder who has gone from a midcard face to a top level heel. She's only 19, but has established herself as a high-level talent.
- Utami Hayashishita: something something tyler bate and jun akiyama. Young rookie with a legit judo background and already a decent selection of good bouts under her belt.
TOKYO CYBER SQUAD
- Hana Kimura: Leader of Tokyo Cyber Squad, a new unit that features wrestlers from all over the world, using a wide variety of different styles. She has a cyber-goth aesthetic.
- Jungle Kyona: A power wrestler who overwhelms her opponents with clotheslines and a hammer-throw Powerbomb.
OEDO-TAI
- Kagetsu: the current leader of her group. She was the World of Stardom champion for almost a year, only relinquishing the title to rival Bea Priestly earlier this year.
- Andras Miyagi: Trained by Meiko Satomura, and formerly known as Cassandra Miyagi. Joined Stardom from Sendai Girls Pro Wrestling.
- Hazuki: aka HZK, the Assault Commander. A high-speed wrestler with hard kicks.
MOVES!?
Naturally, we're gettin' some MOVES
So far I've spotted:
Mayu Iwatani:
- Two Stage Dragon Suplex Hold (finisher)
- High Bridge Dragon Suplex Hold (specialty)
- a new performance/taunt, shown in the promo material
Arisa Hoshiki
- Brazilian Kick - mentioned at the press conference. Per game director Tomoyuki Matsumoto, it took them three and a half days(!?) to animate accurately, due to working around limitations in the sprite system for the game.
PRICE?
... is $19.99 USD!which seems a bit high, but i don't know exactly how much content we're getting, so.
